Beresford, Sutton claim silverware

-

MARK Beresford and Peter Sutton won a trophy each in the latest Ashbourne Golf Club competitions.

Beresford finished top in the Rose Cup Bogey competition with a score of plus three which was just good enough to beat Ryan Overton on a back nine countback, thanks in the main to four straight pars at the start of a difficult second nine.

Overton’s score was good enough to win the first division in a round which included birdies on one, eight, 15 and 16. That was one better than Paul Bebbington, who birdied the fifth, 13th and 17th, while Dave Barrie Snr was third on the same score with a birdie on the fifth.

The second division winner was Mark Hunter with a birdie on the eighth in a round of plus one, while new member Tim Cadman was second, only one behind.

Club stalwart Les Birkett won the third division on plus one, with past captain Steve Bryan one back in second place.

Sutton, another past captain, won the Brough Jeffrey Stableford Trophy (named after a much-missed past captain) in sweltering conditions with an excellent 40 points, including a birdie on the 13th.

The first division winner was Dean Higton, who had three birdies in his round of 39 points, while Steve Walwyn, who birdied eight and 13, was second and Yowie Roberts, on the same again with two birdies, was third.

John Williams, of Kniveton, was the second division winner with 38 points including a birdie on 10, while Andrew Pearson was second with 36 and Beresford was third with 35 and a birdie on 15.

The third division winner was Stuart Cooper with 38 points, while John Bromage was second on 37 and Ian Ward third with 36.
