Another digital release from Curzon Home Cinema, the distributor most bringing the goods in times of social distancing — which is kind of an apt time to be watching this darkly playful story of remote digital romance. A catfishing tale that pings wildly from comedy to thriller to psychodrama and back again, it takes the perspective of the impostor rather than the victim; more surprisingly still, she’s a middle- aged mum who barely knows how to work Instagram. Divorced literature professor Claire ( Binoche) has a yen for younger guys, though they don’t give her a second glance — until, that is, she builds a fake twentysomething dating profile that reels in sensitive stud Alex ( Civil) more intensely than she ever expected. It’s a sly, slinky inversion of patriarchal gender politics, and a peach of a role for Binoche, who plays it with just the right balance of vulnerability and guile.
