Hyundai’s i30 Tourer faces stiff competition from the Vauxhall Astra Sports Tourer and Volkswagen Golf Estate, but it beats both for room, with up to 1650 litres of storage space when the back seats are folded down.

In 138bhp 1.4-litre T-GDI form, the car is nippy and a competent cruiser, albeit not the most frugal one. It is, however, among the most refined in the class, with a composed ride and plenty of driver assist features.

Marks are lost for hard-touch plastics on sections of the dashboard and door trim, but the cabin’s overall fit and finish help make the car a strong contender in the segment.
