BRITISH car buyers can score discounts of up to a third on the list price of new models as dealers struggle to shift stock, according to latest figures.
Auto Express analysed data from sister site, online retailer Buyacar.co.uk to reveal the 10 biggest discounts available right now. It also highlights how it can be cost-effective to buy new rather than dip into the used market with some of the offers currently available.
The Renault Grand Scenic tops the table with 35 per cent off the list price, followed by the Citroen C3 Picasso. Two of the UK’S biggest-selling models – the Ford Fiesta and Ford Focus – also feature in the top 10.
Austin Collins, managing director of Buyacar.co.uk, told us buying new comes with the advantage of personal specification, attractive financial packages from manufacturers and no worries about previous owners. “When you can get a third off the price of a new car instantly, you know that it’s a buyer’s market,” said Collins. “It can be cheaper to buy a brand new car than a nearly-new one. This summer we’re seeing some of the biggest discounts ever offered by manufacturers.
“It’s always a tough period for them, as sales dip between the two annual registration plate changes, but they are still setting tough sales targets because they need to keep cars rolling out of factories.”
Deals aren’t just available on models soon to be replaced, either, with the Fiat 500 and Jeep Renegade up for grabs with nearly a quarter off list price. And just missing out on our top 10 is a new Audi A6, which can be bought with 16 per cent off.
Buyers of some models won’t be so lucky, though, with dealers refusing to knock any money off cars like the Range Rover Sport, Fiat 124 Spider and Dacia Duster.
Collins explained: “If there are lots of customers queueing up to buy cars, then the incentives are going to be reined in. There’s a four-month wait for delivery on the Range Rover Sport, for example.
“And at the other end of the spectrum, Dacias are so cheap anyway that there’s just minimal room to discount.”
