Ght to chunky XAV Self-driving Tesla rival hits road

TESLA may be flavour of the month, but fellow US start-up Faraday Future could be set to spoil the party. Our spies have caught the new brand testing a prototype driverless system near its HQ in Gardena, California.

Don’t be fooled by the styling; while it looks like a Lincoln MKZ, the modified body with LIDAR (laser-based radar detection) LAND Rover has further updated its flagship Range Rover for the 2017 model year.

The SUV gains new driver assistance kit, bringing autonomous braking and queue assist, a driver fatigue monitor and lane departure assist. Also added are towing assist and a low-traction launch mode for the Terrain Response system.

Inside, buyers can spec the larger Incontrol Touch Pro infotainme­nt system first seen on the Evoque Convertibl­e (tested on Page 50); this has features such as a Wifi hotspot and smart watch connectivi­ty. There are 19 new exterior colours courtesy of JLR’S SVO division, too.

The engine range expands to include the 335bhp 3.0-litre supercharg­ed V6 from Jaguar; this gives 0-62mph in 7.1 seconds. A new top-spec Svautobiog­raphy Dynamic edition can be ordered, too, with sportier trim inside and out, tweaked suspension and a lower ride height. BMW is on a bit of a roll with its M cars. The M2 (above) has been universall­y well received and BMW’S talented M division engineers have also been tweaking the M3 and M4 with a special Competitio­n package.

We wanted to find out if the hard work is paying off by bringing them to the Llandow race track near Cardiff, along with the 1M Coupé. Watch our video to see which came out on top.
