Q Warranty part breaks again

LAST July, my MG6 broke down and was fixed with a new part. The part has since failed again, but I’m told the repair won’t be covered this time, as my car is out of warranty. Do spare parts not come with their own warranty? Stephen Fussell, E-mail

A WE got in touch with Motor Codes which confirmed parts replaced under warranty are covered only until the car’s original guarantee runs out and don’t get their own longer warranty. It might be worth asking for a goodwill gesture, though.

Q Too soon for worn flywheel

THE clutch on my BMW 320d has worn after just two-and-a-half years and 50,000 miles. I feel this is too soon for a flywheel to give way. Should BMW pay for a replacement? Naseem Begum, E-mail

A BMW’S Named Component Insured Warranty does cover flywheels. If you’ve opted for this, you may be in luck. However, most standard warranties don’t cover flywheels as they are classed as a wear-and-tear item. Read the T&CS of your warranty for confirmation.

Q Should I buy Cat D bargain?

I’M in the market for a used Porsche 911 and found a great offer on a 2011 model. My only concern is that it is a category D write-off. Are these something I should avoid? Vlad Dumitru, E-mail

A CATEGORY D is the least serious insurance write-off category, usually with slight damage that is repairable. Research how much it would cost to bring it back to roadworthiness and find out what the damage was. Cat Ds can make bargain buys, but do so with caution.
