QSearch for cheap floor mat

I’M looking to protect my car’s carpets, which are showing signs of wear as the mat has worn through on the driver’s side. Although tailored aftermarket mats look great, I’ve been put off by the price. What’s the best alternative? Bill Carter, E-mail A RING has won our tests twice with its Durashield 3000 rubber mats (ringautomotive.com). The mats (above) are durable and easy to clean, cost less than £20 and can be cut to fit your footwell. Use your existing mats as a template to find the right trim lines moulded into the new rubber.

QWill tyres get flat spots?

IT’S time for me to take my recently purchased classic car off the road for the winter. I’ve heard tyres can be damaged if left standing for too long. Is this true, and if so how do I prevent it? Mike Wesley, E-mail A TYRES can get flat spots if they’re left in the same place with the weight of the car on them. Overinflating them can reduce the risk, and move the vehicle every week or so if you have room. The ultimate solution is to jack up the car and leave it on axle stands over the winter, removing the weight from the tyres and suspension.

QBest glovebox torch option

I’VE just discovered that leaked batteries have wrecked the emergency torch I keep in my car’s glovebox. What’s the best torch to keep in the car that will work even if not used for months? Femi Daniels, E-mail A A RECHARGEABLE torch gives a powerful beam and works well if you remember to top it up every few months. Winner of our Issue 1,404 test was the Coast HP7R. Expect to pay around £60; it’s available from a number of online sources Another option is a wind-up torch; we like the Powerplus Barracuda (£14.95, johnlewis.com).
