Split sidewall beyond repair?

I RECENTLY noticed a split in one of the tyres on my mum’s Ford Ka (above). She doesn’t want to have to replace it because money is tight. Could we leave it or is there a cheap way to get it repaired? John Nell, E-mail JUDGING by the picture you sent in, this needs replacing immediately. It is highly likely the sidewall structure is damaged, which could lead to sudden failure, particularly at high speed. Sidewalls cannot be repaired. Get it checked by a tyre dealer, but be prepared to replace it.

Top power tool options

I’M hoping to add some cordless power tools to my DIY kit. Specifically, I’m looking for a drill and impact wrench. Do I have to buy these separately or are there kits around? Clint Burnside, E-mail SEVERAL makers put the tools together because they can share the battery packs and charger. A good budget option is sold by Wolf (www.ukhs.tv). We were impressed by the 20V drill in our Issue 1,436 test and it comes with a 150Nm impact driver and case for £99.98. A second battery costs £40.

Which kit to restore lights?

THE headlight covers on my Mazda MX-5 have gone opaque and now that the nights are longer, I’m noticing the lack of light. Washing them seems to make no difference. What’s the best way to shift the discolouration? Frankie Booth, E-mail IF you have a power drill, go for the Autoglym Headlight Restoration Complete Kit (£22.99, www.autoglym.com). It has several grades of sandpaper discs to restore the shine. Our choice for applying by hand is the QUIXX Headlight Restoration Kit (£11.99, www.quixx.com).
