THE Golf was already a front-runner in the hatchback class, but that hasn’t stopped Volkswagen from giving it a mid-life facelift. It now has a subtly different look, marked out most obviously at the rear, where all models get LED tail-lights.

Inside, all cars have a higher-resolution touchscreen that’s at least eight inches across, while gesture control tech makes an appearance. There’s also a new 1.5-litre TSI petrol turbo engine, which delivers a decent balance of performance and economy.
