WHERE the Mondeo used to be the best choice for those looking for a fun-to-drive large family car, the Mazda 6 Tourer takes up that crown these days. It’s much more driver-focused than the Ford, and is more fun than the Passat as well, although it doesn’t have the blend of abilities that the VW has.

Open the car’s tailgate, and there’s 522 litres of space available. That’s 22 litres more than in the Mondeo Estate, but a huge 128 litres behind the Passat Estate’s capacity. The 6 Tourer’s cabin is pretty spacious, although the Passat has more rear legroom. It also wins on practicality, as the Mazda doesn’t offer much storage, with shallow door bins, only a reasonable glovebox, an armrest bin and two small cup-holders. The Mazda’s seats are comfortable, though, with good adjustment, and they’re sited low down, giving a sporty driving position.

In terms of reliability, we’ve heard of one or two issues regarding the 6, but the facelift should have helped to smooth out any past production problems – and owners tell us that the ownership experience is good, as the car came in 55th in our 2016 Driver Power poll.
