BRITAIN’S car accident hotspots have been revealed in a new study with Bristol the place where drivers are most likely to be involved in a crash. Most accidents are caused by drivers aged between 25 and 35.

Last year, police attended 129,986 accidents in Britain, of which 780 occurred in Bristol. However, taking the population into account, this works out to an accident per every 200 drivers, according to Witter Towbar which carried out the analysis.

Although London recorded the highest number of car accidents at 25,232, due to its large population it was ranked behind Nottingham and Bristol for crashes per driver. Nottingham recorded one crash for every 336 drivers, with London recording one for every 343.

Birmingham and Bournemouth were the fourth and fifth highest cities for accidents per driver. Male drivers caused around two-thirds of all crashes, while older drivers aged 56 or higher were involved in less than a fifth of all accidents last year.

Steve Gooding, director of the RAC Foundation, said: “The figures reflect the high number of scrapes and more serious accidents any user of congested urban roads will be aware of. It’s time we had a national road investigation unit to bring down casualty numbers.”
