Best posh pick-ups

We pick from three on a budget of £20,000

- Dear Lawrence, I need a pick-up for my business, but I want it to be comfy enough to use as the sole family car. What’s available for a £20,000 budget? Jason Ashford, Hereford Contact: Lawrence_allan@dennis.co.uk

FOR: Plush interior, comfy ride, roomy rear AGAINST: Vague steering, most expensive

THE Nissan Navara has always been a more lifestyle-orientated buy, and is now in its second generation. lt feels the least like a truck here, with an interior lifted from the X-trail SUV and lots of technology.

It’s the comfiest choice on test, thanks to car-like rear suspension, while the 2.3-litre diesel is gutsy and refined. It’ll still work hard, however, with a 3.5-tonne towing capacity. We spotted a 2016 Tekna-spec model with 26,000 miles for £19,995.

FOR: Well built, good to drive, large load bay AGAINST: Mixed reliability, least powerful

VOLKSWAGEN’S Amarok came from nowhere to cement itself among the pick-up elite. Subtle styling makes it the classiest choice here. The cabin is solid and comfy, but not as feature-packed as the Nissan’s.

The Amarok’s ride isn’t as smooth as the Navara’s, yet while it’s more refined than the Mitsubishi’s, the 2.0-litre diesel lacks the torque of its rivals. The load bay is the biggest here, though. A 20,000-mile 2015 2.0 BITDI Highline was on sale for £19,500. DATING back to 1978, the Mitsubishi L200 has the longest heritage of the trio. Today’s model has come a long way; it’s still the most rugged pick-up here, with a cabin that’s well equipped but looks and feels dated.

Even so, it handles surprisingly well for a pick-up, and the 2.4-litre engine is the punchiest here, but the ride isn’t as smooth as the Nissan’s or VW’S. It has the smallest load bay, too. A 2016 Barbarian with just 7,000 miles on the clock could be yours for £19,500.
