THE UK’S electric vehicle charging infrastructure is set to grow after fuel giant Shell opened its first charging points in the country. Electric car drivers can now recharge their batteries at sites in London, Surrey and Derby.

The energy giant said that, by the end of the year, it’s planning to have a total of 10 Shell Recharge points in operation, equipped with rapid chargers capable of recharging EVS to 80 per cent in half an hour. The additional stations will open in Kent, Surrey, Hertfordshire, Berkshire and London.

Earlier this month, Shell announced it had acquired Newmotion, one of Europe’s largest EV charging providers. The Dutch charging company has more than 30,000 private and business EV charging points across the Netherlands, France, Germany and the UK. It also operates more than 50,000 public charging points across 25 countries in Europe.

Jane Lindsay-green, Shell UK future fuels manager, said: “Shell Recharge will soon be available at 10 sites in the UK and will offer EV drivers in these areas a reliable, convenient and subscriptionfree charging service.”

The move comes after the Government announced that motorway services and major petrol stations will need to start featuring EV charging points in the future.
