BEST USED COUPE AUDI TT Mk2
OUR PICK Audi TT 2012 (12) 2.0 TFSI, 63,000 miles, £11,425
THE original Audi TT was a design icon, and the latest model is packed with hi-tech kit, so it’s easy to gloss over the second-generation TT. But we reckon it’s well worth some attention if you’re after a used coupé.
It still looks great, with a sporty roofline and shapely body you’d expect from a compact two-door, while the punchy 208bhp 2.0-litre petrol engine provides the performance to match its looks. There’s even a diesel if you prefer something more frugal, but we’d stick with the more responsive petrol to add some fun to the driving experience. With prices from a little above £11,000 for a used 2.0 TT with just over 60,000 miles, the extra fuel costs over the TDI shouldn’t sting too much.
Adaptive dampers are a top option to look for, because they balance ride comfort and handling well, but no matter what the spec, the TT is grippy, comfortable and refined enough to use every day. There’s the option of quattro four-wheel drive for extra traction as well, although this perhaps isn’t worth the extra as front-wheel-drive cars are better value.
The automatic gearbox is reportedly liable to faults, so we’d stick with a manual car. It’s more enjoyable to drive anyway, and definitely the one to go for. Some “It still looks great, with a sporty roofline and shapely body you’d expect from a compact coupé” cars have an ipod connection and a multifunction leather steering wheel, providing acceptable if not totally modern music connectivity. However, this is also an area to look at before you buy, with some owners reporting issues with the media system.
Lots of second-generation TTS were sold during its eight-year lifespan, so there’s lots of choice. Some of the cheapest cars have high mileages, but you need only pay a bit extra for a less leggy version. Be prepared to spend a little more for a more dependable example and you’ll have a fun, high-quality and stylish coupé.
