Cops cash in on speed awareness
POLICE chiefs are facing fresh criticism for using speeding drivers to increase their funds, following a 28 per cent rise in the amount of money forces receive from speed-awareness courses.
The Treasury has increased the amount constabularies receive for drivers sent on these courses, from £35 to £45. This covers the costs of catching speeders, who are then given a choice of a fine and penalty points or a speed-awareness course. With 1.2 million drivers currently attending courses each year, forces are expected to rake in an additional £12million.
