FOR: Fastest and most engaging, simplicity AGAINST: Very impractical, most expensive

TOYOTA’S third-generation ‘Midship Runabout 2’ was reminiscent of the original, with a back-tobasics approach. The looks won’t be to all tastes and there’s limited luggage space, but the MR2’S mid-engined, rear-wheel-drive layout, low weight and soft-top roof make it a riot to drive.

Its revvy 1.8-litre engine gave it strong performance and decent economy, too. A 2003 example with 80,000 miles can be yours for £1,895.

ITS interior is pretty stripped back, but the MR2 is well screwed together. The biggest issue is a lack of storage space – there’s no real boot, only a briefcase-sized stowage area above the spare wheel in the front.

TOYOTA’S reputation for reliability is well earned. Early MR2S suffered a potentially serious engine issue, but a post-2001 model with a good service history should be dependable. Just watch out for subframe rust.
