Car makers to build recharge network

BMW, Ford, Mercedes and the Volkswagen Group have united to establish a new network of fast charging stations across Europe.

The plan, which is being rolled out by a new organisation dubbed IONITY, is aimed at having 400 charging stations across Europe by 2020, each separated by no more than 75 miles.

There are fewer than 5,000 charging stations in the UK alone.
