THE Arona is one of a host of new small crossovers hitting the market before the end of the year. It’s based on SEAT’S Ibiza supermini, but adds a higher driving position and more room inside thanks to its taller body.

The VW Group’s 1.0-litre, three-cylinder engine gives smooth performance and good refinement, and although the interior is a bit sombre, equipment is generous. Unike some rivals in its class, though, the Arona doesn’t feature any sort of off-road tech.
