THE second-generation CX-5 sticks to the impressive formula set out by the Mk1, but improves on it in every area. There’s greater efficiency, added space inside and more engaging handling, thanks to revised chassis tech.

What hasn’t changed is Mazda’s ‘right-sized’ engine options, so you get a 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.2-litre diesel in two power outputs. Only the diesels that can be had with 4WD, and the 148bhp version offers a good mix of performance and economy.
