THE Outback used to be a jacked-up estate version of the Subaru Legacy, but these days it has morphed into more of an SUV that sits above the Forester in the Japanese firm’s range.

The 2.0-litre flat-four ‘boxer’ engine is smooth and reasonably punchy, if not all that economical, and the interior is solid and roomy. Hugely capable it might be, but the Outback remains a leftfield choice against its mainstream rivals.
