LAND Rover has recently replaced its Discovery with an all-new model, but the timeless design ensures the previous SUV still looks classy today. It’s a real multi-purpose tool that’ll happily transport a family of seven in comfort, tow up to 3.5 tonnes, and is one of the most capable off-roaders at any price.

But it’s heavy, so doesn’t tackle corners with grace, and running costs will be steep. We saw a 2010 3.0 TDV6 XS with 75,000 miles for £15,495.

INSIDE, the Discovery is well built and very easy to get on with, while the seating layout is versatile. Visibility is excellent, and if you fold the third row of seats into the floor you get a massive 1,137-litre boot.

THE Discovery’s less-than-perfect reliability is well documented. Everything from electrical gremlins to serious gearbox faults has been reported, so look for a well maintained example before buying.
