Are budget sat-navs OK?
READING your sat-nav tests (Issue 1,492), I realise that even the cheapest model is beyond my budget. I’ve seen cheaper units online. Are they worth considering?
Jackdennis, E-mail
IF you just want a satellite navigation system to get you from A to B then the models you’ve seen online can be a budget alternative. We’ve had good results with the Junsun D100, which can be picked up for less than £50, but don’t expect such units to have the most sophisticated route planning or traffic features.
Blank screen on dash cam
I HAVE just bought a cheap dash cam online and found that the recording screen only stays on for a few minutes before going blank. Is this normal for a dash cam or should I return it?
Micksaul, E-mail
IT’S not unusual for a dash cam display to turn itself off after a few minutes. This is because makers believe a blank screen is less of a distraction for the driver than one that has a moving image. It will still continue to record and you can always review the footage later on to ensure nothing has been missed.
Solution to window woes
SINCE the weather has got colder the windows on my car keep fogging up. I can clear the screen with the heater, but it’s a pain to keep wiping the side windows. What’s the solution?
Wesley Foakes, E-mail
THERE are anti-fog coatings you can apply to glass, but the root of the problem is moisture inside the cabin. If your car has air-conditioning fitted turn it on even in the winter, because the system will help dry out the air. If there’s no aircon then a dehumidifier bag can help; there are several products that are designed for cars.
