Smart motorway lanes clampdown
MOTORISTS could soon receive penalty points and fines for driving in closed lanes on smart motorways, following a new report by Highways England.
The document, seen by the Press Association, says roadside cameras are “currently being tested by the Home Office” to monitor smart motorway users travelling in closed ‘red X’ lanes, and 26,000 warning letters have been sent out since December 2016 to drivers travelling in closed lanes on motorways.
Highways England expects enforcement of red X offences “to commence from spring 2018”.
