FOR: Rapid pace, huge levels of grip, plenty of kit AGAINST: Stiff ride, questionable cabin finish BEFORE the latest RS3 arrived, the Mercedes-amg A 45 was in a class of its own, being faster than any hot hatch around. Producing 355bhp from a 2.0-litre engine, it gains speed ferociously, while the allwheel-drive system provides astonishing grip.

The engine lacks the Audi’s character, plus the Ford will make you smile more, but the Merc’s sharp handling still impresses. The ride is stiff and the cabin doesn’t reflect the price, though. Our search revealed a 19,000-mile 2015 A 45 for £29,500.
