Changing oil before storage

I’LL be working abroad for most of the year and plan to store my car in the garage. I’ve been told I should change the oil before leaving it for a prolonged period. Is this right? Jason Smith, E-mail

ENGINE oil that has been used contains acidic contaminants that can cause damage if left for long periods. It is often overlooked by drivers storing cars, but it is a good idea to change the oil and filter before laying up a vehicle. It also means the car is ready to use when you put it back on the road.

Can I use all-season tyres?

WHILE I know not to mix winter and summer tyres, your all-season test said the Michelin Crossclimate was like a summer tyre. So could I just fit two until my other tyres wear out? John Harris, E-mail

THE same principle applies, because there will be a difference in grip between front and back. This would be exaggerated in slippery conditions, especially snow. The Michelin may behave more like a summer tyre in the wet and dry, but its snow grip is significantly greater and will make the car hard to control.

Getting rid of water marks

I CLEANED up a spill on my car’s rear seat with an upholstery spray, and now I have water marks in the fabric. The light-coloured stains really show. How do I get rid of them? Lucas Welby, E-mail

TACKLE the affected area again with your cleaner and remove the marks. Try to work towards a seam, fold or crease to mask them; if any remain, the whole section will have to be worked on. After cleaning remove moisture with a wet and dry cleaner, keep car doors open and perhaps dry with a hair dryer.
