The Civic Type R feels like a genuine sports car to sit in. That’s in part thanks to its figure-hugging sports seats, low driving position and superb control weights. The transmission is brilliant, too.

GEARBOX This Honda’s six-speed box is among the best of any car you can buy. The short throw and mechanical feel make changing gear a joy. The VW’S DSG set-up shifts quickly, but leaves us cold.
