Porsche Boxster S
FOR: Sublime chassis, great engine AGAINST: Parts and servicing prices THE Boxster has always stood in the shadow of its bigger brother, the 911, but as a driver’s car it’s just as sublime. The mid-engined layout delivers wonderful handling, and it’s matched by sharp steering that’s full of feel, and a snappy gearbox.
Three sizes of flat-six engine found their way into the Boxster. All offer a spine-tingling soundtrack, but the 3.2-litre S model is the one we’d have. A 2002 example with fewer than 80,000 miles should be within your reach. IT might not quite feel as special as a 911 inside, but the Boxster has all of the basics spot on. Standard kit on the entry-level version is measly, but S models gain leather seats and a better hi-fi stereo system. WITH a front and rear boot, the Porsche is surprisingly practical. Servicing bills are the highest of this trio, but the Boxster holds on to its value well. Oil leaks are usually a sign of crankshaft seal failure.
