Struggling with car cover

-

I’VE just bought an indoor fitted cover for my Honda S2000. It fits well, but it takes me ages to put on, walking around the car several times. Surely there’s an easier way?

Bruce Michaels, E-mail

THERE is. If you fold the cover correctly as you take it off your car, it will be easier to get on again. Lift the sides on to the roof and bonnet so there is a strip around half a metre wide the full length of the car. Then, starting at one end, fold it in manageable lengths a couple of feet or so to the other end. Fitting is the reverse.

When is best to clean car?

MY car got really dusty in the recent hot spell and I wanted to clean it on my lunch break. But a colleague said I should wait until the evening, as it would be too hot. Was he right?

Josie Wood, E-mail

IT’S best to avoid direct sunlight and putting soaps and chemicals on hot panels, as suds and rinse water can dry on the paint and leave marks. It’s also harder to see dirt in sunlight, while some products won’t work as they were designed in sunlight or on hot bodywork.

Keeping on top of tread

I’VE had to replace two tyres on my car due to uneven wear. I now want to keep on top of how they’re wearing. Have you tested tread depth gauges and, if so, which product is best?

Dave Thomson, E-mail

WE last tested tread depth gauges in 2017 (Issue 1,482). The best analogue pencil-style gauge was the PCL TSO 1T15. Expect to pay around £15. For about £4 more you can have a digital version, which also includes a pressure gauge. Our choice was the Michelin Digital Tire Tread Depth and Pressure Gauge 12293.
