Q Waterless cleaner worries A HOSEPIPE ban has just come into force in my area. I’ve always been a bit suspicious of waterless cleaners because they look like they will scratch paint. Are they safe? Don Mckay, E-mail

A WE’VE used waterless cleaners with some success for several years with no noticeable effect on paint. The key is to only tackle light grime. Use lots of spray to ensure the dirt is lifted and not dragged over the car. Our test winner is Meguiar’s Wash & Wax Anywhere (above). Armor All has a new wipe version, too.

Q Can I paint my calipers? I LIKE the look of painted brake calipers and fancy doing it on my car. Is it advisable to paint them and are there any special precautions I should take if I do so? Barry Oldman, E-mail

A THIS job can be done at home. Ensure the calipers, wheelarch and suspension are all carefully masked off and the surface of the caliper is thoroughly prepared to remove any brake dust. Make sure you use paint designed to be used in very high temperature areas; Halfords has several suitable paint options.

Q Spare wheels safety fears I’VE been looking for a used spare set of wheels, as I want to fit them with winter tyres. I’ve seen a set, but the design is different to those on my car. Is it safe to fit them? George Mitchell, E-mail

A IF they’re off the same car as yours with the same width, size, inset and PCD (Pitch Circle Diameter, where the stud holes are), you should be okay. If it’s an aftermarket set check your bolts or nuts have the same angle as the seats in the rim. These can vary on different wheels for the same car and aren’t interchangeable.
