What do M-way signs mean?
I’VE just passed my test and started driving on motorways. I saw some small signs on the roadside with the motorway’s name and other letters and numbers. What do they mean? Mark Deane, E-mail
THESE are location signs positioned every 500 metres so you can let emergency or breakdown services know where you are. The top line is the motorway, the second line, usually A or B, the direction you are travelling and the last figure is the distance in kilometres from a given point, such as the Dartford Crossing on the M25.
Running in my new car
I’M due to take delivery of my first new car. Friends have talked in the past about running in new cars. Is this still something that should be done, and what does it involve? Andy Mackay, E-mail
THE handbook should advise on any running requirements. Today’s tighter manufacturing tolerances mean it’s no longer the concern it once was, but it pays not to stress the engine, drivetrain or brakes for the first 1,000 miles or so. Check oil and coolant levels weekly until you know how much is being used.
Stuck with sticker glue
THE previous owner covered the used car I’ve just bought in decals. I’ve peeled them off, but the glue is harder to shift. Normal car wash has proven ineffective. What will work? Joe Montgomery, E-mail
THIS is a common problem, particularly if the stickers have been on for some time. You need a solvent to dissolve the glue. Tar removers do the job; we’ve had good results with Autoglym Intensive Tar Remover ( www.autoglym.com, £7.50). It’s also effective for removing polish and wax from a car’s plastic or rubber trim.
