Best used crossover

Is Qashqai, Kadjar or MG GS the top buy second-hand?

- Years: 2016 to date Engine: 1.5-litre 4cyl, 164bhp Ins group: 17 Official econ/co2: 45.5mpg/141g/km Why? By far the most powerful option here, and the MG is well equipped for the money, too.

Renault Kadjar

Kadjar Dynamique Nav Tce 130

Years: 2015 to date Engine: 1.2-litre 4cyl, 128bhp Ins group: 16 Official econ/co2: 50.4mpg/126g/km Why? The Renault Kadjar is a practical crossover, and the 128bhp 1.2-litre engine is strong as well.

Prices from: £11,495

WHILE the Qashqai has established itself as the crossover king in the sales charts, the Renault Kadjar – a car with which it shares a great deal of its parts – is a very credible alternative to the popular Nissan.

The Kadjar’s refreshed interior boasts nicer materials, it’s more practical thanks to its 527-litre boot, and it rides sweetly, too, making it a comfortable cruiser.

A lower-mid-table finish in our Driver Power 2018 new car satisfaction survey reveals owners aren’t that happy with the Renault; 16 per cent reported an issue.

Nissan Qashqai

Qashqai Acenta DIG-T 115

Years: 2014 to date Engine: 1.2-litre 4cyl, 113bhp Ins group: 17 Official econ/co2: 50.4mpg/129g/km Why? Solid, dependable family transport. It’s the reason why this is one of the UK’S best-selling cars.

Prices from: £8,290

IF you can’t beat them, join them. The Nissan Qashqai was the fourth bestselling car in Britain in 2017 and the nation’s favourite SUV, with more than 64,000 registrations in total.

You can put that down to it being a good all-rounder. While it’s not as polished as the Kadjar it’s still sharp to look at, easy to drive, practical enough for daily life and, crucially, affordable.

A solid 22nd-place finish in our Driver Power 2018 new car poll contrasts with a poorer 55th in the used car survey.

MG GS

GS Exclusive DCT

Prices from: £12,051

THE MG GS hit the market two years ago positioned as a value-for-money alternative to the likes of the Qashqai and Kadjar, offering more for less.

There’s more power and kit, and nearly all examples are still covered by the five-year warranty. But the GS doesn’t deliver on comfort, isn’t as practical as the Kadjar and feels a bit cheap.

High-spec Exclusive cars are pricey second-hand, although lesser models start at around £10,500. The GS hasn’t featured in our Driver Power polls.
