space and practicality are key for any estate car, but buying second-hand alters the rules slightly, because your choice is so much more varied.

It’s hard to ignore the skoda superb estate, though. This current-generation car offers everything you’d get in a new example, just with big discounts over dealer prices. It mixes all the best bits of the standard superb with a bigger boot and even more practicality.

The skoda has a huge 660-litre boot with the rear seats up, so is one of the most practical estates on the market. Yet fold them down and that figure almost triples to 1,950 litres. But while space is key, the sizeable superb is more than just a big box on wheels.

The interior is well built, and the se car we’ve chosen rides well on smaller wheels and has an acceptable haul of standard kit. engines range from basic petrol and diesel variants to a subtle but fairly highperformance 276bhp 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol.

The price secures an entry-level 1.6 TDI that’s economical, even if it’s not too refined. There should be just enough performance for most buyers’ needs and with used prices starting from not much above £11,000 for the s trim level that features necessities such as air-con, Bluetooth and DAB, this currentshape car is well worth it. The se model we found adds cruise control and parking sensors, too.

This third-generation superb estate offers ‘simply clever’ features, such as umbrellas in the doors, nets in the boot and lots of cabin storage. It’s these little elements that add up to make the skoda one of the best cars in its class, with important boxes checked.

The superb offers limo-like legroom in the rear, so passengers won’t be left wanting for comfort.
