App offers VAG drivers easy access to car diagnostics
THE latest version of the Carly app lets drivers of Volkswagen Group vehicles tune their car’s electronics. The app, which works via an adaptor attached to the on-board diagnostics port (OBD), allows owners to access tools that are usually restricted to workshops. Essentially it gives users a way into the car’s electronic systems and control units without visiting a garage.
This latest version – for owners of VW, SEAT, Skoda and Audi cars built after 2000 – allows the driver to run accurate diagnostics to detect faults, as well as to configure the car to their own requirements.
These options include comfort settings for the electric windows and sunroof, plus flashing the lights and programming beeps when locking and unlocking the car. Carly also encourages owners to try out coding, where you can uncover hidden dashboard modules, such as a lap timer or information useful for DIY maintenance.
Want the mirrors to tilt when selecting reverse? The app allows that to be set. They can also be made to automatically fold in when the car is locked.
Access to the computer systems means the app can uncover a car’s history, too. This includes its mileage, which can reveal any clocking that may have been done. Previous owners’ driving styles can also be seen, including fuel economy and journey times.
The system works with Android and iOS smartphones. Carly OBD adaptors cost £44.90 for the former and £61.90 for the Apple version. These work with the free apps, but if you want full functionality then the Pro versions cost £48 a year.
