VW readies Mk8 Golf GTI for launch in 2020
THE next-generation Volkswagen Golf GTI has been spied undergoing tests for the first time. It will reach the UK at the end of next year, 12 months after the arrival of the standard hatchback model.
Like all Golf GTIs, this Mk8 model has undergone a substantial cosmetic overhaul. Even the disguise can’t quite hide the car’s more aggressive bodykit, new boot spoiler and larger, chromed exhaust tips. Following tradition, the new GTI’s cockpit should feature a pair of heavily bolstered tartan sports seats, a chunky sports steering wheel and a set of aluminium pedals.
This Golf GTI mule features a lower ride height and larger disc brakes than the more conventional Mk8 Golfs spied before. As on the current model, an electronic locking differential is likely to be standard, while adaptive dampers and Volkswagen’s Dynamic Chassis Control (DCC) system will probably be offered as optional extras.
We expect that the new Golf GTI will be powered by a new turbocharged fourcylinder petrol engine developing around 290bhp and 380Nm of torque. These figures are similar to those of the outgoing Golf TCR and would provide Volkswagen with a more competitive rival for the Renault Mégane R.S. and the Honda Civic Type R. An even more powerful Golf R, with four-wheel drive and as much as 350bhp, is also in the pipeline.
