Q Do I need pre-winter polish?

I HAVE a BMW X1 with Protect X paint protection. The car is now a year old, and I was wondering whether I should polish it before the winter sets in. BMW says there is no need, but I am not so sure. Can I have your opinion, please?

Gillian Nichols, E-mail

A YOUR dealer should know what is best for the car because this is a BMW product. We also think that what he says is right because a polish, which contains abrasives, would only damage the protective finish. If you were seeking to add protection, that should not be necessary because the coating is intended to last years.

Q Is old clay still safe to use?

IS there a ‘use before’ date for clay bars? I’ve had one for a couple of years, but will this old bar still work and not damage the paint? Max Williams, E-mail

A THE determining factors will be how dirty the clay is and if it has become too hard. Any dirt can be easily spotted, and you should be able to fold the clay to give a clean side. The problems come if the bar is hard and can’t be worked easily. If that is the case, consider replacing it; there are good options for less than £15.

Q Going out for a Chinese tyre

I’VE been searching for a new set of tyres and am tempted to go for a much cheaper Chinese brand. They are E-marked and have tyre labels so I can’t see why not. Am I making a mistake? Jon Hammersley, E-mail

A WE haven’t tested many Chinese brands, but when we have, the performance has been lacking next to premium makers. The biggest differences are in the wet – which is when an accident is more likely. We would never recommended buying on price, but if you must watch the pennies, go for a maker like Hankook. It’s usually cheaper, but performs well.
