BMW 3 SERIES Which one?

FROM £800 Upmarket executive saloon has consistently been the keen driver’s choice

-

THE BMW 3 Series has never been the cheapest model on sale, but if you want a car with a great image and top driving experience, it could fit the bill perfectly.

First launched in 1975, the 3 Series is the performance benchmark for compact executive cars, famous for its potent engines and balanced rear-wheel-drive chassis.

Such a revered badge means a used 3 Series costs more than an equivalent VW Passat or Ford Mondeo, but you’ll also get more back when it comes time to sell on. Plus owners will tell you that ‘The Ultimate Driving Machine’ is worth the extra money thanks to its engineering and build quality.

History

LAUNCHED in 1997, the fourth-generation 3 Series (known by its E46 model code) is popular with enthusiasts, thanks to its pure design, relative simplicity and high quality.

It’s best known for its smooth six-cylinder petrol engines, including the 3.2-litre M3 with 343bhp. The 360bhp CSL is even more sought after, thanks to its extra power and track-focused factory modifications.

The subsequent E90 and F30 models have become bigger and more complex, with smaller, turbocharged engines, but handling and performance have remained first-rate. Comfort, efficiency and technology have also shot up with each new model, while passenger and boot space have improved.

BMW’S engines are all excellent, and choosing more power doesn’t necessarily bring crippling running costs if you’re easy with the throttle. SE trims are a sensible choice, with air-con and plenty of safety kit, but buyers love M Sport versions, owing to their aggressive bodykits and extra kit.

Its closest rival is the Mercedes C-Class, which matches it for image, has superb interiors but isn’t quite as fun. It’s a similar story for the Audi A4, which favours frontand four-wheel drive. That’s advantageous in poor weather, but less involving.

Verdict

IN 2014 the 3 Series took our Best Compact Executive Car award for the sixth time thanks to its kerb appeal, driving dynamics, low running costs and decent practicality. The latest version took the same award in 2019.
