Car precautions during lockdown

MY car only has a quarter of a tank of fuel left in it. Is it okay to leave the tank at this level, or should I fill it up to the brim?

If you can safely get to your nearest filling station, you should brim the tank with petrol or diesel. This will limit condensation in the fuel tank and help prevent rusting. Make sure you use disposable gloves when touching the fuel pump. Also consider adding a fuel preservative to help keep fuel lines clean.

Do you have any advice on where I should park? Is a level street preferable to a steep driveway, for example?

If you have a garage at your disposal, this is obviously the best option because it protects your car from the elements; make sure it’s ventilated, as this will prevent moisture from building up. If not, try to park somewhere level, preferably open and away from any trees. If you must park under a tree, invest in a car cover.

Is there anything productive I can do with my car during the lockdown? I’m no mechanic, but I have some spare time.

One option is to go over the paperwork and make sure it’s all up to date. Check the status of your MoT, insurance and VED road tax.

Are there any general maintenance tips you can give me for the lockdown? I don’t want any problems to develop.

Change your oil as needed, and consider changing your air filter while you’re at it. Run the engine for 15 minutes every week or two if the car hasn’t been driven. Don’t leave the handbrake on – use wheel chocks with the car in first gear. Make a note of all you do, so you don’t forget anything after the lockdown ends.

Is cleaning my car important during the lockdown? I’m not worried about it looking nice, but I want to protect it.

If you do have the spare time, a thorough clean isn’t a bad idea. Be sure to immediately wash off any bird mess that lands on the paint during the lockdown. Most important, though, is wiping the interior down with antibacterial wipes after each journey.
