What will happen when water and my e-Niro mix?
I HAVE a Kia e-Niro and I’m worried that if it rains while I’m charging it, the water could cause some electrical problems. Do you know of any companies that make covers for electric vehicle charging doors?
David Burns, E-mail
WE don’t know of any such product, but we can assure you there is no need to be concerned about charging an electric car in the rain, as long as you’re using the appropriate charging cables (i.e. ones actually designed for charging EVs). Electric cars are made to be weatherproof and manufacturers conduct extensive testing to ensure there are no issues from rain or any other weather conditions.
Space-reserving frowned on by traffic wardens
IS there any law that prevents a person standing in a roadside parking bay for a few minutes to reserve it for someone? Two traffic wardens recently told me to move when I did this to save a spot for my wife. John Whalen, E-mail
TRAFFIC wardens are employed by local authorities to enforce parking restrictions, so one would hope the two you met had a comprehensive knowledge of the rules. If you’re not satisfied this was the case or feel you were treated unfairly, you could consider reporting this incident to the local council and asking for clarification on the rules. You should be able to do this via its website.
Potentially expensive fix is grinding my gears
MY 2004 Ford Ka has recently developed an issue where it makes a horrible grinding noise when you turn the key in the ignition. The engine only starts about a third of the time. I’m hesitant to go to a mechanic because the car isn’t worth much so
I don’t want to incur a big bill. What’s a cost-effective repair method?
Rory Brent, E-mail
THE best way to find the cause would be to consult someone with mechanical knowledge. If you’re worried about money, some garages offer a free repair check/inspection prior to carrying out any work. You can then determine whether having the problematic part replaced would be economical or not.
