Q Does snow foam work?

I HELPED a friend wash his car because I wanted to try his snow-foam lance. We covered the bodywork and let it soak, but there was still dirt left behind when it was rinsed. Is this right? Jack Cookson, E-mail

A

SNOW foam is not designed to entirely remove dirt. Its purpose is to release grit and prevent muck being dragged over paintwork. This does not mean you no longer have to touch the car with a mitt, but it should reduce the risk of creating scratches and swirls when you do.

Q Looking for quiet rubber

I NEED to get some new tyres for my car, so I’m looking for something that’s less noisy than the rubber I’m replacing. How can I find a quiet tyre? George Youngman, E-mail

A

THE decibel ratings on the tyre label are for pass-by noise, not what’s heard in the cabin, and there is no direct link between the two. Also, don’t write off your current rubber, because it often becomes noisy as it wears. We do a cabinnoise measurement in our tyre tests, and this should point you in the right direction.

Q Working out the best bench

I’VE rented a garage, where I plan to work on, as well as park, my car. I’m not allowed to drill holes or fix items to the walls, so what is the best option for a workbench?

Simon Wood, E-mail

A

WE haven’t tested freestanding workbenches, but they’re available in wood or metal, and have options for wheels if movability is important. If space is at a premium, we’d go for a folding bench that can easily be stored out of the way when not needed. There are many variations on the Black + Decker Workmate theme to suit most budgets. It’s good to try before you buy to check stability, build quality and the like – or you could check that the seller has a good returns policy.
