KEEP an eye on what’s going on in front and behind your car with the latest addition to Pioneer’s camera line-up.

The VREC-DH300D is a two-channel set-up with a camera for the windscreen and a second one for the rear window, which is connected via a six-metre cable. The front cam boasts 1440p WQHD (wide quad-high definition) recording, while the rear unit captures footage in 1080p full HD. Pioneer says the front cam can read number plates day or night through its 135-degree lens. The rear cam has a 128-degree spread. Both record on a Sony CMOS sensor with Starvis technology storing the 27fps footage on the supplied 16Gb micro SD card. The system can take up to a 128Gb card.

There’s no WiFi for viewing via a smartphone app, but recordings can be replayed on the three-inch colour LCD screen. The monitor also displays footage from both cameras when it’s operating.

Recordings are overlaid with GPS data which provides vehicle position, speed, direction of travel and time. There are also two recording modes, allowing users to choose between running the cam on a continuous loop or only when prompted by an event. The camera also has a mode to cope with low light and one for when the vehicle is parked, using the built-in battery to record if the vehicle is nudged.

The newcomer also comes with a four-metre power cable designed to work from a 12V socket.
