Got any car queries?

Q Could going via a broker be the best way to a cheap car?

I WAS going to buy a used car, but a friend of mine who got a good deal on a new model through a broker has suggested I do the same. How do brokers operate and what are the implications of buying a car from one? Harry P, E-mail

A

BROKERS purchase large numbers of new cars at lower bulk prices, then sell them on at a higher individual price, which still tends to be a few thousand pounds less than the manufacturer or dealer’s list price would be. Brokers can operate online or in physical offices, but may offer fewer facilities than a traditional dealer. If you do use a broker, make it a reputable one and read the small print.

Q How can I find out if van got too close for comfort?

I PARALLEL parked my car on a public street and came back to find a van right in front of it, with the two vehicles’ bumpers virtually touching. There are some small scuff marks on my front bumper. How can I have the cause of this investigated?

Name withheld, E-mail

A

ASSUMING you took several photographs of each vehicle, you should look for any CCTV cameras in the vicinity and see if you can identify who would have access to the footage. You can then report the incident to the relevant police force; they should check the CCTV footage for evidence and can contact the registered keeper of the van. You could even speak to your insurer if the damage were bad.

Q What are the rules about cyclists on zebra crossings?

I RECENTLY moved to London and, when driving, I have seen many people crossing zebra crossings while riding bicycles. I know I must give way to pedestrians, but am I required to do the same for those on bikes? Peter Hall, E-mail

A

NO, only pedestrians have right of way on zebra crossings. Cyclists should not be riding their bikes on the pavement (unless there is a cycle lane marked on it) and are supposed to dismount before walking across a zebra, pelican or puffin crossing. Toucan crossings, however, where there are red/green lights for both pedestrians and bicycles, do allow cyclists to cross alongside those on foot.
