Which multimedia system is best for music, sat-nav & connectivity?

Peugeot 408 i-Connect Advanced | Key features: Three years’ TomTom live

THERE’S a 10. 25-inch touchscreen fitted to the 408, but its location on the dashboard means it’s a bit more of a stretch to reach than the Cupra’s screen. The graphics are top-notch, though, with sharp edges and a high-resolution widescreen display.

Responses are fast enough, and route mapping is quick, although Peugeot persists with the need to scroll through menus when selecting functions, such as radio stations. The system scrolls very quickly, making it difficult to find the setting you want.

The i-Toggle bank of shortcuts on the lower screen are a useful addition that let you pick the functions that are used most frequently. It allows you to quickly swap between your smartphone’s menus and the car’s options, too.

Cupra Formentor

Cupra Connect | Key features: Wireless Apple CarPlay & Android Auto

THE Cupra’s 12-inch display has a squarer aspect ratio than the Peugeot’s, and it’s set closer to the front seats, so it’s easier to reach.

However, there are still some frustrations. The home screen is split into three – for navigation, audio and phone – but you can’t simply touch one of these for access, you need to use one of the small shortcut buttons beneath. The climate controls are frustrating, too, with access via a strip across the top of the touchscreen, although the shortcuts, including settings to warm your feet or cool the cabin, are useful.

The system is simple to use, but screen resolution isn’t quite as sharp as the 408’s. The way the buttons pop up when you move your hand close to the screen is neat and leaves the screen uncluttered when not in use.

?? ?? One option that’s unavailable to the plug-in versions that you can add to the two cars tested here is a space-saver spare wheel. It costs £125 to add it to the Cupra and is a dealer-fit option for the 408.
