ENGINE

Check the cambelt was changed at 72,000 miles or every five years. A new water pump at the same time is good to see. The engine thrives on fresh 5W-30 semi-synthetic oil every 12,000 miles. Injector problems are common.

TRANSMISSION

The gearbox is strong with few synchro problems. The clutch should be good for 90,000 miles. The clutch slave cylinder can wear out due to lack of regular brake fluid changes. (They share the same fluid reservoir.)

SUSPENSION AND BRAKES

Bushes become noisy around 60,000 miles. Front suspension lower swivel hub pivots can suffer water ingress and seize. Back springs break. Rear brake lines are prone to rust. Discs and pads can wear quickly.

ELECTRICAL

The Phase 1 car’s electrics are suspect but components and connections were improved for Phase 2 models. The window motor control module can suffer water ingress. Keyless entry and ignition system can be troublesome.

BODY

Generally rust-free although rear wheel arches attract stone chips and need attention before corrosion starts.

INTERIOR

Driver’s seat side bolsters can take a hammering and the plastics scratch easily. Check the awkward aircraftstyle handbrake works as it should.
