New 911 GT2 RS is ’Ring master

-

THE PORSCHE 911 GT2 RS has set the fastest time for a lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife by a rear-wheel-drive series-production car — and it has gone 10sec faster around the famous circuit than the 918 Spyder in the process.

Its time of 6min 47.30sec is the second fastest by a road car and is 1.4sec slower than the Nio EP9 electric hypercar achieved. Porsche broke its own target of 7min 05.00sec by almost 18sec.

The lap time makes the GT2 RS not only the fastest 911 of all time around the circuit but, in beating the 918 Spyder, also the fastest non-competition Porsche. The time is 25sec faster than the 911 GT3 too.

Porsche ran two cars around the ’Ring for the attempt — one piloted by test driver Lars Kern, the other by Le Mans winner Nick Tandy. Kern set the fastest time.

Porsche claims the 7min 05.00sec target was beaten repeatedly during the record runs.

The Mclaren P1 LM, a road-legal version of the track-focused 986bhp P1 GTR, has been clocked at 6min 43sec around the ’Ring, but that car is a limited-edition conversion, not a series-production model.
