New GTS versions add a more hardcore edge to the 718 Cayman and 718 Boxster

Cayman and Boxster upgraded

Two new 718 GTS models will be the most driverfocused variants of the Porsche Cayman and Boxster line-ups so far.

Revealed ahead of a Los Angeles motor show debut next month, the cars’ four-pot turbo boxer engine receives a new intake system and changes to its turbocharger. Its 361bhp output is 15bhp higher than the version of the engine used by the Boxster S and Cayman S. Peak torque is 317lb ft.

The increased reserves are channelled to the rear wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox or optional sevenspeed dual-clutch automatic. A mechanical rear differential and electronically controlled torque vectoring also feature.

Fitted with the dual-clutch gearbox, which enables launch control, and the standard Sport Chrono Package, the two new GTS cars are capable of 0-62mph in 4.1sec and a top speed of 180mph.

The new GTS models are distinguished from their less powerful siblings by a series of subtle styling changes. These include a lightly altered front bumper, black tinted headlights and tail-lights, a more prominent rear diffuser and central black tailpipes.

There are black GTS badges at the base of the doors and standard 20in alloy wheels painted in a black satin finish. The ride height is also 10mm lower as part of the chassis changes brought on by the adoption of Porsche’s Active Suspension Management system as standard equipment.

Inside, the GTS models have extra Alcantara accents within the seats, steering wheel, centre console and armrests.

Orders for the new 718 GTS pairing are being taken now, with first deliveries due in mid-december. Prices start at £59,866 for the 718 Cayman GTS and £61,727 for the droptop 718 Boxster GTS.

Both cars represent the sharpest offering in their respective line-ups at this stage, but recent history suggests that a featherweight 718 Boxster Spyder is on the cards, and Porsche has already talked openly about the 718 Cayman GT4. That car is due to stick with a six-cylinder engine, like its predecessor, rather than adopt a higher-performance version of the turbocharged flat-four unit.
