Rekindling a Route 66 romance

Several years ago, I wrote asking Autocar’s advice on the best vehicle in which to enjoy a dream trip on Route 66. Despite some excellent suggestions, the vicissitudes of life have thus far sadly prevented me from living the dream.

It was therefore a joy to finally make the trip through Matt Prior’s account of his own Route 66 odyssey, so wonderfully illustrated by Luc Lacey’s stunning photography (4 July). Matt’s trip might only have lasted eight days, yet I was left with the feeling that, but for necessary editorial constraints, he could have written reams more about his adventures on the Mother Road.

So, thank you Matt and Luc for an excellent account that has thoroughly renewed my appetite for making the trip. I might not be able to stretch to an NSX when I finally get my own kicks on Route 66, but your original suggestion of using some serious American metal to do so still sounds pretty good to me.
