Lando hopes for more glory
Lando Norris’s stunning charge to third place in the seasonopening Austrian Grand Prix made the 20-year-old the third-youngest podium finisher in Formula 1 history, behind Max Verstappen and Lance Stroll. Mclaren team boss Andreas Seidl said the result proved Norris had “made the next step” as a driver. Norris finished behind Lewis Hamilton, who was demoted to fourth place after incurring a five-second penalty earlier in the race.
WRC adds Estonia to 2020 schedule
The World Rally Championship has added Estonia to its revised calendar for this season. The new event will restart the season on 4-6 September, and will be followed by rallies in Turkey, Germany, Italy and Japan. Events in Belgium and Croatia could still be added to the calendar.
Plato to sit out BTCC season
Double British Touring Car (BTCC) champion Jason Plato won’t compete in this season’s championship, along with the Power Maxed Racing squad for which he drives. The team, which runs a pair of Vauxhall Astras, said that it was skipping this year’s disrupted championship for financial reasons but was committed to returning next year. Plato has won a Btcc-record 98 races.
Nascar champion sidelined by Covid-19
Seven-time Nascar champion Jimmie Johnson has become the first high-profile driver forced to sit out a race after testing positive for Covid-19. Johnson, who is asymptomatic, missed the recent race at Indianapolis Motor Speedway and won’t be allowed to return until he has posted two negative tests.
Fernando Alonso in shock return to F1
Fernando Alonso will make a shock return to Formula 1 next season with Renault, the team with which he won his two world titles. The Spaniard, who turns 39 this month, split with the Mclaren F1 team after 2018. He has since won the World Endurance Championship with Toyota and entered the Dakar Rally and Indianapolis 500.
