Man accused of knife attack
A MAN has appeared in court charged with carrying out a knife attack in a South Ayrshire village.
Daniel Howie denies charges of serious assault, threatening or abusive behaviour, and possessing a blade in connection with an alleged incident in Sandgate, Tarbolton, in June 24 last year.
The 41-year-old is alleged to have caused fear and alarm by shouting, swearing, and making threats to a woman.
It’s alleged he was in possession of an offensive weapon, namely a pen knife, in Montgomery Street, Tarbolton on the same date.
He is alleged to have assaulted a man by repeatedly striking him on the body with a knife “or similar implement” to his severe injury on June 25.
He faces a further charge of behaving in a threatening or abusive manner by shouting, swearing and making threats while brandishing a knife.
Mr Howie, whose address was listed in court papers as c/o HMP Kilmarnock, pleaded not guilty to the charges at a pre-trial diet hearing at Ayr Sheriff Court.
Mr Howie’s solicitor said his client was lodging a special defence of self-defence.
Making a motion for bail, Mr Howie’s lawyer said his client would be willing to comply with a condition not to enter Ayrshire except for court hearings, and said his client had no reason to be in contact with the complainter.
But the Crown opposed the motion for bail, referring to Mr Howie’s previous criminal convictions.
Sheriff Shirley Foran refused the motion for bail and Mr Howie was returned to custody.
He will return to court to face the allegations at a later date.
