It’s Baywatch for Troon South Beach

- Stephen Houston

A David Hasselhoff or Pamela Anderson- type figure could be set to form Ayrshire’s first lifeguard outfit.

Not the golden beaches of Santa Monica in Los Angeles - but the no- less stunning silver strand that is Troon South Beach.

The idea has emerged after increasing police focus on making the beach safe.

It has become a Facebook right of passage for teens who use the train to hit the sand.

Town police chief Inspector Alister Kelly revealed a lifeguard on permanent summer season duty is being discussed.

He is a key figure of the Safer Shores campaign formed by the police and South Ayrshire Council.

He told last week’s Troon Community Council: “Next year one of the proposals is to have a lifeguard on the beach.

“I will be working closely with the RNLI who provide lifeguards in other areas of the country.

“It is early days and we are working on it, but all going well it will be in place for the summer.”

It was the weather that helped police the beach this summer, with only four occasions when the masses descended.

Ins. Kelly said: “It became less and less of a problem for us because of early intervention and a by- law banning alcohol from trains during the day.

“And communication has improved as well as high visibility on the beach.”

After the success of the police beach buggy this year, he is hoping to get a bigger vehicle capable of carrying six passengers.

A survey for feedback on the buggy will take place during Wintertainment.

● Under control dogs are now able to walk on all of Troon South Beach.

A sign saying no dogs May- September has now been removed as it was unenforceable.
