Time for Troon to fly flags

A bid for bunting begins

- Stephen Houston

A bid is being launched to swathe Troon in BUNTING next season.

While other towns seem to have lines of brightly coloured bunting fluttering in the breeze, Troon has felt bereft of that traditional British welcoming seaside look.

Now a new group has been formed with the explicit purpose of bedecking the town and making it look great next year.

Campaigner Amanda Wainright has now agreed to run a shadow group as part of Troon Community Council.

She said: “I was really disgusted at the decoration in the town to celebrate the 70th Troon Taxi visit.

“I would like to see the town decorated to show our appreciation.

“I am 51 and cannot remember a time when the taxis did not come to town.

“I personally don’t have the finance but would love to help get the town looking its best.

“We just want good old fashioned here- we- are bunting.

“It is something that is severely lacking in the town.”

Just along the coast Prestwick has kept the Commonwealth Games bunting flying, while Troon’s was taken down with some tall tale that it had to be given back to organisers.

Chairman Helen Duff said: “I feel it was a disgrace for the 70th taxi visit that the flags were flying high in Ayr and Prestwick but not Troon.”

The meeting heard part of the problem is Troon no longer has a business association, while the Prestwick association is active.

Councillor Peter Convery said: “Everything you see in Prestwick Main Street such as hanging baskets is bought by the business association and the council, then put it up and ensure it is watered.”

Councillor Nan McFarlane said a new sub group of the community council would be able to apply for grants towards bunting.
